Book Review: Debt by K.C. Wells

English teacher Mitch Jenkins is somewhat in a rut. He's still reeling from the recent break up with his long-term partner, and longs for a bit of adventure in his perfectly nice, but mundane, life. He is soon introduced to a secret club in which any fantasy can become a reality...for a price. When he sets eyes on Nikko Kurokawa, the world, as he knows it, shifts.

Nikko only works at the club as a means to pay off a debt. He just wants to do his job and get as far away from this place as soon as possible. However, a particular client makes him feel things that he knows are dangerous, especially in this line of business.

This book started out quite promising, but I think it soon became weighed down by secondary characters, far-fetched scenarios and dangling plot lines. I really enjoyed the main characters. Both Mitch and Nikko were extremely likeable people and their chemistry was palpable. I truly believed their feelings for one another. Unfortunately, there were plot points, especially towards the end, that left me wondering if this is the first book in a series. [What happened to Mr. Richards? Who is Mr. M? Will Nikko ever see Ichiro again? Will Jesse be okay? What was the outcome of the trial? In my opinion, Jesse and/or Randy should have their own book(s). Out of all of the secondary characters, they were my favorite.]

I found myself skimming through some chapters because they mainly consisted of Mitch talking to friends and family members. I (obviously) enjoyed reading about the moments between Nikko and Mitch, but I also wanted to know more about Nikko's relationship with his brother. The book definitely picked up in the second half, so I understand that exposition can be slow when an author is trying to build a universe.

All in all, this was a nice book to read. It had its problems in my opinion, but the love story between Mitch and Nikko was really sweet and lovely to see play out.

Book Review: The Doctor In Unit H (Mockingbird Place #4) by Kris Cook

Maddox Butler and Jarvis Black become fast friends when they become roommates upon entering medical school. They are both prodigies who graduated college by age 18 and have long, promising careers ahead of them. Their chemistry is undeniable and soon the two young men are a couple.

When Maddox is accused of a crime he did not commit and sentenced to jail, not only is is career in medicine over, but also his relationship with Jarvis. Maddox refuses to drag down the man he loves with his felony status; however, if Jarvis is anything, he's determined. He will stop at nothing to ensure that Maddox knows he's not going anywhere.

I originally thought this book had a really great premise, but as I read further, problems started to arise. Insta-love has never really been an issue for me, but in this book it was glaringly obvious. They went from strangers to roommates to "I love yous" in an incredibly short amount of time, which made it all seem insincere in my opinion. I also had problems with the antagonist in Maddox's storyline. I know there are plenty of crazy people in the world, but this guy seemed like a caricature. He went from regular guy to crazy stalker in literally less than 60 seconds. Again, this drastic change in emotion and character just seemed forced to me.

In general, the MCs and the side characters were all very nice, likeable people. This is the fourth book in the series, but it can be read as a standalone. However, readers will probably have a better understanding of Mockingbird Place and its residents if you read the previous three books.

Phoenix From the Ashes by bunnysworld

Phoenix From the Ashes by bunnysworld

After a sudden and unexpected break up with Rin and Haru, Sousuke and Makoto turn to each other for comfort and solace.

This is a gorgeous story that just keeps getting better and better! I love seeing the way that Sousuke and Makoto's relationship develops, especially after the pain they endured. I have to admit, this will not make you like Haru very much, but it's truly a lovely story that you should try out!

The story was inspired by this heartrending fan art by smlove0319.

I ❤️ Yaoi: Appa Sijibga? (Papa is a Bride?) by Jung Yi-Ru & Kim Su-jin

Hello fellow yaoi lovers! This week's feature is Appa Sijibga? (Papa is a Bride?) by Jung Yi-Ru & Kim Su-jin!

A cute manhwa about a single father who doesn't know how to take care of his young daughter. In front of a supermarket, the father and daughter run into another man buying dolls. Could he be a pervert? But this new man is good at understanding a young girl's mind?! What will develop between the two handsome men? Will her father really become a bride?

I thought this manga was pretty sweet. The interactions between the two MCs can be a little frustrating, especially at the beginning, but as they get to know one another better, they actually become pretty endearing. The little girl is also spoiled, but that's to be expected since she's all her dad has.

The Morning After by Bartholemew

The Morning After by Bartholemew

When Connor discovers that Oliver declined his Stanford acceptance, his world comes crashing down around him. Oliver has just ruined his one chance for them to get away and be free of the murder, mayhem and drama that seems to cling to them in Philadelphia. Oliver has done the unforgivable.

I'll warn you upfront, this story is pretty much all angst so far. Connor has to come to terms with losing his opportunity to attend Stanford and deal with the repercussions of his reaction to the news. He and Oliver are not in a good place, but I have hope that this story will show them work through their issues and come out stronger on the other end. Don't let the angst deter you, this is a great read!

I ❤ Yaoi: Stand By Me! by Himuka Tohru (Free! Doujinshi)

Good morning, yaoi lovers! This week's selection is the Free! doujinshi Stand By Me! by Himuka Tohru!

Haru realizes that he relies too heavily on Makoto and is determined to make it without him.

At first I thought this was going to be a mostly fluffy dj filled with flowers and rainbows, but there is a good amount of angst that really pulls at the heartstrings. Readers will see how much both Haru and Makoto rely on each other for various reasons and how that dependence on one another makes their relationship work. Also be on the look out for a little devil named Nagisa who plants the seed of reflection in Haru's mind.

Peace (And How to Get There) by writers_haven

King Rin Matsuoka works hard to ensure the safety of his kingdom. With the threat of potential war with Iwatobi looming of his head, he seeks out the advise of one of his most trusted advisors and confidants, Ai. However, other forces are determined to protect the Samezuka at all costs, even defiance of the King.

This story immediately grabbed my attention and held it until the very end. Your heart will soar as you watch the development of Rin and Ai's sweet relationship, and it will also break as you learn how war is not only a means of protection but also a business. Definitely give this story a try! I highly recommend it!

This manga has a very interesting premise that drew me in right from the start. It isn't a manga that's filled with puppies and rainbows; there is grit, pain and regret that makes it a compelling and captivating read. I can't wait to see why lies behind the mystery of Kei and his past relationship with Kyle!
